Honor the Overlooked

Yo yo yo WC Kids!

Yesterday in the ROCK, we continued talking about this month’s virtue of honor, which we define as letting someone know you see how valuable they really are.

In the Clubhouse, Tyler was excited to invite Mrs. F, Cammie and Marshall to the screening of the film they made together. Tyler directed, Cammie and Marshall did the lighting, sound and costuming, and Mrs. F gave the kids rides and cooked all of their meals. Even though the whole group worked hard on the film, Tyler acted like it was only his project. In fact, the film got nominated for an award and he got the only ticket to the awards ceremony.

When Tyler went to the awards ceremony, he won the award! Mrs. F, Cammie and Marshall snuck in the back to see if their film got honored. When Tyler was making his acceptance speech, he realized how rude he had been to his friends. During his speech, he called his friends up to the stage and talked about how hard they worked. Tyler honored his friends by showing how valuable they really are!

Who can you honor this week? Is there someone who you know who doesn’t get any credit? Go out of your way to thank them for their hard work. See you soon!

Select Self-Control

Good morning, WC Kids!

Last week in the ROCK, when our kids showed up, they had quite a surprise – our entire service was in black lights! You never know what you’ll find when you come to worship in the ROCK. Here are three of our glowing actors, Harrison, Colin and Rachel:

In the clubhouse, Vinny and Gordo were awaiting a brand new video game, Skateboard-a-palooza 2012. They got a copy of it in the mail before anyone else and they wanted to be the very first people to play it! As soon as they put the game in the system, Vinny wanted to play the game as fast as possible. When they saw the game menu, Gordo realized that he could customize his player and skateboard…he wanted a Periodic Table of Elements board and lab coat and goggles! Vinny got very frustrated with Gordo and said some pretty rude things. Then, Vinny got even more mad when Gordo dominated him on Skateboard-a-palooza! Vinny yelled at Gordo and stormed out of the clubhouse!

In a crazy turn of events, Vinny and Gordo came out during Word and Rachel, our awesome storyteller helped the guys work through their argument. They apologized to each other and agreed to select their words carefully in the future! That was our bottom line for the morning:

This week, we encourage you to talk about this bottom line with your family…wouldn’t it be awesome if you helped each other with selecting words? See you soon!

Hey there, WC Kids!

We hope you had a totally awesome weekend with your families – it’s always fun to have a day off! We definitely had a super cool morning of worship in the R.O.C.K. on Sunday. We are still talking about self-control, which is choosing to do what you should do, not what you want to do.

In the clubhouse, our very stylish friend, Cammie was a little out of control! She was on a website called “e-pay” buying lots of designer clothes and accessories! When Gordo walked in the clubhouse to say hi, Cammie was buying the entire Armani spring line for the bargan price of $11,482.49! Can you imagine spending that much money? Gordo was so worried that Cammie was lacking so much self-control that he invented a machine to help her. When Gordo strapped the machine to Cammie’s arms, it would tickle her every time she spent money on e-pay. Here’s the crazy part: Cammie kept spending money even though she was being tickled! Just when Gordo gave up on his machine, Cammie kneeled down on her knees to pray. The entire time Cammie was talking to God, she didn’t buy anything on e-pay! Cammie realized that she couldn’t get self-control from a machine – the best way to learn self-control is by asking God for help. What a great lesson! Here was our bottom line for the morning:

We pray that this week you can remember that God can give you the power to say no to anything! See you soon!

Super Self-Control

Happy New Year, WC Kids!

We are excited to see what God has in store for you during 2012 – it’s going to be a great year! We started the year off with a bang by learning about our new virtue of Self-Control, which means choosing to do what you should do, not what you want to do.

In Word, all month long, we will be looking at the book of Proverbs. We looked at Proverbs 25:16. You are not going to believe what it says:

That’s right – God is telling us not to eat too many sweets or we will get sick. We can show self-control by saying no when we need to. Eating one more cupcake might sound yummy but in the end, you won’t feel very good. God loves us so much that a guideline like this is put in the Bible!

Self-control can be about more than just food. You might want to keep playing outside in the sun, but your mom probably wants you to come in the house so you don’t get sunburned. It might sound fun to chase your brother through the grocery store, but your dad is asking you to stop so that you don’t run into another shopper.

How can you show self-control this week? Do you have any end of the semester exams? You can show self-control by putting down your iPod touch or DS, turning off the TV and studying hard. It might not be the most fun option, but it will be worth it in the end!

We are praying for you! You can how self-control with God’s help. See you in the ROCK next week!

Glorious Gratitude

Happy Thanksgiving, WC Kids!

This month in the ROCK, we unveiled a brand new virtue: gratitude!

Yesterday in the clubhouse, we discovered that Gordo was stressing out about a group project for history class. Gordo, Cammie, Sam and Tyler were supposed to give a presentation about Thanksgiving in costume! Gordo and Cammie realized that their two other group members were a little confused about their project. They asked Sam to dress up as the Mayflower, which is the boat that the pilgrims travelled to America on. When she showed up to the meeting, she was dressed as a flower! When Tyler showed up, he had forgotten all together! Gordo, who had worked very hard on the project, was extrememly upset with his friends!

The project turned out fine, and the kids got an A+! However, Gordo still wasn’t happy! He told his friends that he was the only one who deserved an A+ because he had worked on the project the longest. Tyler and Sam softened Gordo’s heart when they thanked him for his hard work; Gordo saw that his friends deserved credit too!

Yesterday in the ROCK, we learned about the story of the 10 lepers from Luke 17:11-19. Open up your Bibles at home and read this story as a family. Jesus healed ten lepers but only one of them returned to thank Jesus. Are you more like the nine ungrateful lepers or the one who thanked Jesus?

See you next time, WC Kids!

More Than Words

Happy fall, WC Kids!

The ROCK was rockin’ yesterday morning with excited kids who were eager to learn about serving God through creativity!  We learned about the creative life of David, and we focused on 2 Samuel 23:1-2.

Elizabeth started out our service by talking about making your mark!

She was trying to explain to the kids that making your mark means doing something great in the world.  Before she could finished, Kyle rushed on stage to show her what he had been working on for the past few days. Kyle made his mark all over Southlake!  He took spray paint and wrote his name all over the front of Main Event, Dragon Stadium and White’s Chapel!  He had a lot of explaining to do and certainly needed to listen to this week’s Bible Story!

In Word, with the help of some awesome volunteers, Elizabeth told us the story of David.  Throughout David’s life, he showed creativity to make the world a better place.  When he was a boy, David used a slingshot to kill a giant!  When he was older, he wrote a lot of songs, about many different emotions. A lot of the songs are about praising God. These songs make up the book of the Bible, Psalms! When David was King, he brought the Arc of the Covenant to Jerusalem and he was so happy that he danced! He reached out to people that he cared about, even his friends’ family members. David helped draw the plans for God’s temple to be build. Even though David did amazing things, one of the best things he did might have been the last words he spoke. At the end of his life, he thought back about everything he had done and he gave God the credit. David said that the Spirit of the Lord spoke through him! David left his mark on the world and couldn’t have done it without God’s help.

This week, talk with your parents about how you can make your mark. They can help you see gifts that God has given you. You can use these gifts to take part in God’s big story for the world!

See you next Sunday!

Cool Creative Craniums!

Howdy, WC Kids! We are so excited to unveil a brand new virtue for the month of October!

In Word, we learned about the story of Baby Moses, which can be found in Exodus 1:22-2:10. Fancy Grace interviewed Moses who told us about his super cool sister, Mariam, and his mother.  When Moses was a baby, the Pharaoh ordered that all of the baby boys should be killed. In order to save Moses, Mariam and his mother floated him down the Nile river in a basket to Pharaoh’s daughter. As soon as Pharaoh’s daughter found Moses, Mariam jumped out of the bushes and suggested that Pharaoh’s daughter allow Moses mother to take care of him. Then, after Moses’ mother raised him, he could live in palace and be protected. How creative! Miriam used her imagination to save Moses’ life!

In Intro and Exit, Mrs. F had Grandpa Henry and Gordo hard at work preparing her art to display at a festival. She had some very interesting art that wasn’t exactly award winning. Mrs. F realized that she was trying to prove herself and she wanted everyone to notice her for her creativity; she didn’t want people to think that she was only a mom. Grandpa Henry encouraged her by bringing out a box of her childhood art. Mrs. F was very touched that her dad had kept the art for so many years. Grandpa Henry pointed out that she is creative, and she doesn’t have to enter an art contest to prove it. Gordo cheered Mrs. F up by dressing up as a French art buyer and buying one of her childhood art projects.

Just like Mrs. F learned this week, you were created so that you can be creative!

How can you use your imagination to do something unique this week?  See you on Sunday!

Neighborly Knowledge

Happy Monday, WC Kids!

This week in the ROCK, we had some friends who were learning how to treat other people.  We looked at the story of Jesus teaching in the temple, which is found in Luke 4:14-30.

When our storyteller, Rachel, started Word, she was suddenly joined by an interesting lady named Emily Toast.  She thought that Rachel was her new assistant for Emily’s Esteemed Etiquette Edvice column.  People write her letters and she gives them advice for how to treat others.  We weren’t wild about her advice!  A kid wrote Emily about their classmate who eats tuna sandwiches because it’s all they can afford.  Emily told the kid to stay as far away from the tuna-eating classmate as possible.  How rude! Rachel told Emily that Jesus looked to scripture to see how to treat others.  When we discover what God says, we will know how to treat others.

In the clubhouse, Marshall had learned about the Renaissance Era and decided to follow the Knight Code.  We was eating weird foods, talking about slaying dragons and made Gordo dress up like a maiden so that he would have someone to dance with!  Marshall was so distracted that he couldn’t even help Sam get her kitten out of a tree!  His friends finally got through to him and helped him remember that the best place to turn to learn how to treat others is the Bible, not the Knight Code!

That’s all we have this week!  Join us in the ROCK next week for a brand new virtue!

What’s shakin, WC Kids?!

Yesterday in the ROCK, we continued learning about our newest virtue, knowledge, which we define as discovering something new so that you can be better at whatever you do!

At the beginning of our service, we learned that Kyle wanted to ride his scooter down a ramp and jump over all of the kids in the service!  Elizabeth didn’t think it sounded like a good idea, but Kyle told her that he studied the laws of physics and that it would work perfectly!  At the last moment, when Kyle was about to fly off the ramp, he decided not to do it.  He admitted that he hadn’t read his physics book and he had no idea if it would work.  Elizabeth pointed out that it’s always a good idea to learn about a new hobby so that everything will be okay in the end!

In Word, we heard from our awesome storyteller, Rachel, about a story when Jesus used his knowledge to do something really impressive!  When Jesus was an adult, God asked him to go into the wilderness to spend time with him for 40 days.  He went without food so that he could focus on God.  While Jesus was there, the devil came and tempted him to do things that God wouldn’t like.  Jesus knew scripture so well that he could quote scriptures to resist the devil.  The devil said, “if you are the son of God, turn these stones into bread.”  Jesus responded, “Man does not live on bread alone.”  Bam!  Jesus knew exactly what to say because he studied scripture when he was young.  You can find the entire story in Luke 4:1-13 – read it with your family this week!

Next Sunday, the 5th and 6th grade girl’s small groups have an event.  Email Claire at cstewart@whiteschapelumc.com for more information.

See you next week, dudes and dudettes!

Lost Looney

Hey WC Kiddos!

This week in the ROCK, we continued learning about Grace by starting a series on the story of the lost son, which can be found in Luke 15:11-20.

In the clubhouse, Tyler informed Vinny and Cammie that he would not be returning to school this year!  Instead, he was moving to Hollywood to be a famous movie director.  Surprisingly, Tyler’s parents gave him his college fund and let him leave!  He was acting pretty rude to his friends and wouldn’t listen to their advice.

Rachel, this week’s Storyteller, was watching Tyler act crazy and had to stop the action!  She stepped in and explained to us how Tyler was reminding her of a story that Jesus told.

There was a son who rudely asked his father for his inheritance.  When the father gave it to him, he left home and wasted all of his dad’s money!  The son became hungry and was forced to get a job feeding pigs.  He realized that he had messed up and returned home to ask his father if he could be his servant.  To the son’s surprise, when he arrived home, his father gave his a huge hug, new clothes, and a huge party!  The father forgave the son and celebrated that he was home.

Meanwhile, in the clubhouse, Tyler spend all of his college fund on movie star clothes and a gold plated camera!  He didn’t leave himself enough money to buy food!  He realized that he messed up and returned home.  Tyler was prepared for major apologies but Cammie and Vinny ran to him and gave him a huge hug!  Tyler’s parents made his favorite meal for dinner and welcomed him home!  When Tyler apologized to his parents for wasting their money, they explained that they gave him a $300 “Tyler learns his lesson fund.”  What nice parents!  Tyler was very relieved!

Tyler’s parents and friends showed grace – just like God does.  God rescues us from bad situations.  The truth is, no matter who we are, we all need to be rescued by God.

WC Kids – have you ever been lost?  How did it feel?  Who found you?

Thanks for reading and we’ll see you next Sunday!
